INDIAN WELLS FUNDS ON-SITE SHELTER MEDICAL CLINIC

Shelter From The Storm has opened an on-site medical clinic at the organization’s emergency shelter, thanks to an $83,000 gift from the City of Indian Wells.

“Battered women and their children are one of the region’s most medically underserved populations,” said Lynn Moriarty, executive director at Shelter From The Storm. “This wonderful support from Indian Wells is another major step forward for our agency and the abused women and children we serve.

The clinic, which is named for the city was developed with V. Douglas Jodoin, M.D., left, who directs and oversees the facility.

The clinic has two examination rooms; Spanish-English interpreters to facilitate physicians’ communication with monolingual Spanish-speaking women and children; staff to schedule appointments for shelter residents and maintain a full schedule for participating physicians; social workers and marriage and family counselors who provide women and children with individual and group counseling and psychosocial support; a part time staff psychiatrist to provide evaluations, consultation and medication monitoring; and case managers who link patients with support services including public assistance, job training and permanent housing.
